Lead - Cost Per Acquisition (CPA) Tracking for your Affiliate Program

Last updated 7 months ago

PayKickstart's Lead Tracking feature, also known as Cost Per Acquisition (CPA), allows you to reward affiliates with a commission for every qualified lead they generate.

This is a powerful strategy for building an email list during a pre-launch, driving webinar registrations, or growing your audience with a lead magnet.

Follow the steps below to configure your Lead Tracking campaign.

Acess the Campaigns section, and find the Campaign you wish to enable Lead Campaigns for, choose the option to the campaign settings.

To edit the Campaign, click on the 3-dotted menu option on the right side, and then choose the Edit Campaign option.

Inside the specific campaign’s settings, switch to the Affiliate Program tab:

Then locate the Commission Settings (Lead) option and toggle it on.

This will reveal the + New Lead Campaign option you need to select to create a new Lead Campaign for your Affiliate Program.

If you already have existing Lead Campaigns, you will be able to edit them at any time in this section, please see Step 3 for further details on all available options.

A Lead Campaign pop-up will appear.

You need to enter the required details in order to start tracking your leads.
To find out more about each option, please see the details under the image below:

Name: Unique name for the lead campaign for reference. This name will be visible to your affiliates.

Landing Page URL (Opt-in URL): URL for the page that will host the opt-in lead form.

Thank you URL: URL the lead is sent to after submitting the opt-in lead form.

Affiliates: You have the option to choose if you would like All Affiliates to be able to promote this Lead Campaign offer, or choose only Selected Affiliates that would be able to promote it.

If you wish to disable the option for affiliates temporarily instead of removing the entire lead campaign, simply select the No Affiliates option.

Commission Tier 1: Commission amount the Main Affiliate sharing the link with a lead will earn as their direct commission for a confirmed lead.

The commission rate can be set to 0, if needed.

Commission Tier 2: Commission amount the 2nd Tier Affiliate will earn if any of their invited affiliates makes a commission for any confirmed lead.

The commission rate can be set to 0, if you do not wish to offer Tier 2 commissions.

Block Duplicate Signups from Same IP Address:

Enabling this option will prevent a person from using the same IP address to signup more than once using the lead form.

→ It is recommended to enable this option to prevent any potential fraudulent sign ups, allowing you to only accept confirmed leads from one device, only once.

Email Integration: Lead campaigns require an email integration. Select your integrated email platform.

  • Email account: The integrated email platform account you are using.

  • List Type: Select the list type your email platform offers. Typical options are “Lists”, “Form”, and “Sequence” depending on your autoresponder integration.

  • List: Select an email list from your related email platform to use with the lead campaign.

  • Add Tag: Add tags to the customers profile in your email platform.

  • Remove Tag (if available): Remove tags from customers profile in your email autoresponder platform.

Webinar Integration (optional): To add the lead to a webinar, enable this option, select the webinar platform integration, then the specific webinar.

IPN URLs (optional): Allows for firing IPN POST’s for lead related sign-ups that would trigger after the lead is done submitting the lead form.

When adding IPN POSTs you have the ability to select a specific event, or pass data for all events to the Webhook URL listener.

To find our more about IPN POSTs and for examples of the passed data, please view our API docs at → https://docs.paykickstart.com

Once ready, click the Save button to save your Lead Campaign settings.

Your next steps will include setting up your Tracking Methods so that you can properly track any lead and commission to the correct affiliate.

First, and the most important step, is to set up the tracking method for your Opt-In form and page.

To begin, click on the Conversion/Tracking, </>, option in the Commissions Settings (Lead) area of your Affiliate Program campaign’s tab.

This is the first and most critical step.

You need to add the Lead Submission Form Code to your Opt-in Page.

The provided form is uniquely tied to your PayKickstart campaign and is how the system captures lead information sent by your affiliates.

Method A: Opt-In Form provided by PayKickstart
(Recommended Method)

  • Locate and Copy Your Unique Form Code: In the Conversion/Tracking </> section of your campaign, find the code block labeled "Lead Submission Form ". This code is generated specifically for your campaign.

  • Embed the Code: Open the editor for your lead capture page.
Paste the entire code block (both the <form> and the <script> parts) into the HTML of your page where you want the sign-up form to appear.

  • Save and Publish: Save the changes to your page.
The basic name and email form should now be visible.

Then add the Lead Tracking Script and Validation Method (see further below) to you your lead form page and any product landing pages.

Additional: Styling Your Form with CSS

The default HTML form is very basic in format.

You can use CSS to style the form's fields, labels, and button to match the design of your website.

This is especially relevant if you used Method A.

If you use the Method B below, you will style the form using your landing page builder's visual editor.

Method B: Integrating with a Landing Page Builder’s Form

Please note:

We can only provide limited support if choosing the Method B route, due to each landing page (website) builder having different options.

We recommend reaching out to the support team of the tool you are using to check if they support field mapping for opt-in forms.

This method, while not the default option, can be used if you are using a landing page builder (such as ClickFunnels, Leadpages, Instapage, Unbounce, etc.) that uses its own form elements.

Instead of pasting the whole code, if the landing page builder supports it, you would connect your builder's form to PayKickstart.

  1. Get Your Form's POST URL and Field Names: First, find your unique "Lead Submission Form Code" in PayKickstart (see Method A, Step 1). You don't need the whole code, just two key pieces of information from it:

    • The POST URL: This is the action URL inside the <form> tag.

      • Example: https://app.paykickstart.com/lead/YOUR_UNIQUE_ID

    • The Field Names: These are the name attributes for each input.

      • name (for the customer's full name)

      • email (for the customer's email address)

  2. Configure Your Landing Page Builder's Form:
Now, go to your landing page builder and edit the form on your page. The exact terms may vary, but you will typically follow these steps:

    • Set the Form Action: Find your form's integration or submission settings. Look for an option like "Submit to URL," "POST to URL," or "Webhook." Paste your PayKickstart POST URL into this field. Ensure the submission method is set to POST.

    • Map Your Form Fields: Check the settings for each field in your form (e.g., the name field and the email field). Make sure the "Field Name" or "Name Attribute" for your email input is set to email and the name input is set to name. This tells PayKickstart which data to put where.

Here is a general guide for popular platforms:
*the information below is provided by AI, please check the related platform’s support documentation:

    • ClickFunnels:
In your form's settings, set the SUBMIT GOES TO action to your PayKickstart POST URL.

Then, for your input fields, ensure the "Input Type" is correctly set (e.g., "Full Name," "Email Address") so the variables match perfectly.

    • Leadpages:

In your form's "Integration" settings, choose "Other" or "Webhook."

Paste your POST URL into the provided field.

Leadpages will typically map the standard name and email fields correctly.

    • Instapage/Unbounce:

In the form settings, look for "Integrations" and select "Webhook."

      Add your PayKickstart POST URL.

You will then be prompted to map your form fields to the names name and email.

  3. Save and Publish: Save your changes.
Your landing page builder's form should now be connected to PayKickstart and will create a lead when a user signs up.

We recommend testing the form on with an affiliate link and a different device to ensure everything is working properly.

In order to ensure proper tracking to your landing pages, we always recommend ensuring that the JavaScript tracking code which is also provided in your funnels be added to the landing page which hosts your checkout forms.

This way you can ensure you can view your Traffic report stats properly, such as your Unique Visists and Page impressions.

This script is optional, and will not affect the validation tracking for your Leads, but only help in better presenting the stats in your reporting sections.

Then select and set up one of the tracking/validating methods. This is used to help confirm the lead in PayKickstart.

If you are using Conversion Pixel as your validation method, you need to ensure the pixel script is placed on the thank you page (the page the lead will be redirected to after opting in).

You can also validate the lead via our API.

For more information about validating leads via the API option, please see our API guide and look for the “Confirm Lead” API Call at → https://docs.paykickstart.com/

The validation method you selected and set up will be used to add new subscribers to your email list/PayKickstart and track the number of visitors each affiliate sends to your lead generation page.

To protect your lead generation forms from bots and automated spam, PayKickstart supports Google reCAPTCHA. Implementing this ensures that only genuine users can submit your opt-in forms.

1. Generate Your Google reCAPTCHA Keys

Before enabling this in PayKickstart, you must generate a API key pair from Google.

  • Step 1: Go to the Google reCAPTCHA Admin Console.

  • Step 2: Click the "+" (Create) icon to register a new site.

  • Step 3: Enter a Label (e.g., "PayKickstart Lead Campaigns").

  • Step 4: Select the reCAPTCHA v3 (Verify requests with a score) option.

  • Step 5: Add your Domains (e.g., website.com and any custom domains you use for your landing pages).

  • Step 6: Accept the Terms of Service and click Submit.

  • Step 7: Copy your Site Key and Secret Key.

2. Implement on Your Lead Campaign

Once you have your keys, you need to link them to your Lead campaign settings within PayKickstart.

To do so, simply enter your Site Key and Secret Key into the required fields.

After implementation, the reCAPTCHA widget will begin to function for your opt-in form on your landing page.

In the Admin Console match the exact URL where your opt-in form is hosted, otherwise the reCAPTCHA widget will display an "Invalid Domain" error.

After adding the lead form code and tracking method, you will now have the basic lead form on your opt-in page for customer to use and affiliate to share.

The lead submission form is a basic name, email and submission button form.
You can use CSS to design the lead form to match your page as seen in the example photo below.

Affiliates will now have a lead campaign link in their affiliate accounts to use for lead signups.

  • You can view all of your leads by going to Payments → Leads

  • You can also see if the lead is Confirmed and if they have converted to a Buyer.

Confirmed Lead: Once the lead submits the lead form, they will receive an opt-in confirmation email via the 3rd party email platform you have integrated with the lead campaign.

Once the lead clicks this confirmation link, they will be marked as “Confirmed” in your PayKickstart account.

Vendors can also manually confirm a lead campaign lead if needed.

Paying out affiliates for their referred leads is handled the same way that you payout normal commissions.

PLEASE NOTE: In order to payout an affiliate for a related lead, the lead will need to have confirmed their opt-in with your email service.

More information about paying out your affiliates can be found in this article:
→ How to Handle Affiliate Commission Payouts

Important Note:

Regardless of which tracking method you use, PayKickstart has a number of fraud detection features built-in to minimize the chances of fraudulent leads.

However, as a rule of thumb, its important to always be mindful of the affiliates promoting your lead campaign and to monitor the leads on a regular basis, looking for anything that seems suspicious or unusual – especially before paying out commissions.

If you are looking into testing your own lead forms as the main vendor, we recommend using a different device than you would typically use for managing your PayKickstart account. If attempting to fill out the form on the same device you have logged in as the Vendor on, you would receive an error that the form has already been filled out.
